Why Merantau Chambers

The Way We Work

Immigration decisions often carry significant personal weight. Our approach is arranged around giving you orientation before asking anything of you.

Clear Pathway Assessment

Before any filing begins, we map your situation against the relevant criteria and share a written summary — so you understand the path before committing to it.

Realistic Timelines

We share realistic processing timeframes at the outset and revise them if conditions change. No overpromising; only what we can reasonably anticipate.

Thorough Documentation

Document preparation is handled methodically. We review each file against current ESD and TalentCorp criteria before submission, reducing the likelihood of requests for further information.

Qualified Practitioners

Our team holds relevant Malaysian Bar qualifications and maintains active familiarity with policy revisions from the Expatriate Services Division, Immigration Department, and TalentCorp.

Confidential Handling

Sensitive matters — including enforcement situations — are handled with appropriate discretion. Initial consultations are conducted privately and at a measured pace.

Considered Communication

We correspond in plain language. Every update explains what has happened, what comes next, and what, if anything, is needed from you.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

How long does an Employment Pass application typically take?

Processing through the Expatriate Services Division generally runs between four and eight weeks from the date of submission, provided the file is complete at the point of lodgement. Category I applications with a higher salary threshold sometimes move more quickly. We share an expected timeline at the start of each engagement and update you if circumstances shift.

What documents are typically needed for an MM2H application?

Under the current MM2H framework, applicants are generally required to provide proof of liquid assets and offshore income meeting threshold levels, valid passport copies, a medical report, a clean police clearance, and a completed application form. Requirements have been revised several times in recent years; we conduct an up-to-date eligibility review before advising you to compile any documentation.

Can a visa refusal be appealed, and is it worth doing so?

Refusals under the Immigration Act 1959/63 carry limited statutory appeal rights, but several review routes exist depending on the stage at which the refusal occurred — administrative representations, representations to the Director General, and in appropriate cases, judicial review. We provide a written matter assessment first, covering the sequence of events and realistic prospects at each available forum, before recommending how to proceed.

Do employers need to be involved in the visa application?

Yes. Employment Pass applications require a sponsoring entity that holds active ESD-registered company status and has an established payroll. We review the company's standing and any outstanding compliance obligations before filing. Where a company has not previously sponsored an expatriate, we assist with the initial ESD registration as part of the engagement.

How are your fees structured?

Our fees are quoted on an engagement basis, covering preparation, correspondence, and follow-up for the specific matter. Government filing fees are payable separately and are set out transparently before any payment is made. We do not charge for the initial matter assessment, and no filing fee is collected until you have reviewed and agreed the scope of work in writing.

Is my information kept confidential?

All client information is held under legal professional privilege and is not shared with third parties except where disclosure is required by the authority handling the application, or where you have given express written consent. For sensitive enforcement matters, the initial consultation is conducted privately and we take the necessary steps to ensure your information is handled with appropriate discretion throughout.
